Learn and Burn Fall 2025: October 18th in Carlton, WA
9 am. Registration and Introduction.
9:30 am. Instruction on Fire Behavior: how do fuel loads, arrangement, topography, and weather patterns impact the way fire behaves.
11:00 am. Briefing: everything you need to know in preparation of the afternoon burn.
12:00 pm. Breakout sessions.
Holding overview: learn the tasks and responsibilities associated with keeping the fire inside the control lines.
Drip Torch overview: learn how to operate a drip torch and the ignition patterns used in a broadcast burn.
Snack.
12:30 pm. Test fire followed by ignition. People will be divided into the Holding Team and the Ignition Team. Anyone seeking experience with a drip torch will be given the opportunity to rotate in the Ignition Team under the supervision of an experienced person.
3:00 pm. Meal provided. While we eat we’ll talk about mop up procedures.
3:45 pm. Mop up: learn how to safely put out the fire on the perimeter so that it doesn’t escape overnight.
5:45 pm. Final debrief for the day.
